Paul Sullivan

Dr. Paul Sullivan has been a professor of economics at the National Defense University (NDU) since July 1999. He is also an Adjunct Professor of Security Studies and an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Science, Technology and International Affairs at Georgetown University. He was Senior Fellow at the East West Institute (EWI) during 2007. Dr. Sullivan has also been involved in the energy work at the UNCTAD with a focus on Africa and the Middle East.

He was a member of the “Seminar on Religion and Development” at Georgetown, The Public Interest Law Group “Roundtables on Iraq”, the working groups on Iraq, Iran, Libya and "The New Marshall Plan for Water and Energy in the Developing World" at the Atlantic Council, and various other working groups and high-level meetings related to economic and resource stress, economic development, energy issues, and inter-faith relations.

For six years before his time at NDU, Dr. Sullivan taught and researched at the American University in Cairo, Egypt. Over the years, numerous media in five continents have interviewed him on a wide range of issues. Dr. Sullivan has also given over 150 public talks.

Dr. Sullivan was awarded his B.A., Summa Cum Laude, with Junior Phi Beta Kappa status, from Brandeis University. He has M.A., M.Phil., and Ph.D. (with highest honors) degrees from Yale University and a diploma from the prestigious Seminar XXI Program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Dr. Sullivan’s research during his sabbatical year from NDU (2009) is focused on “The Financial Crisis and Africa”, “Obama and the Middle East”, various papers on energy and water security in the Middle East and Africa, and a series of short articles on the piracy-terrorism-energy nexus. He sees strong connections between the energy and resource stresses and the financial, political and social stresses within Africa and the Middle East.
